  • IMPACT Magazine is a source of health, sports, and fitness information for Canada. The articles that they publish are provided mostly by experts in the health, fitness, and sports performance industries. The length of the articles varies. Department stories tend to range from 400 words to 1,500 words. According to a Tweet by one of their editors, they pay 0.40 per word. For more details, read their writer’s guidelines.

  • Verso Books is an independent, radical publishing house. They publish 100 books a year. They accept pitches for their blog. They usually publish articles of 1,000 to 2,000 words.   • JRNY Travel Magazine features travel stories, essays, and photos from some of the world’s best talents. According to their editor-in-chief, they pay £250 for 2,000 words or £125 for 1,000 words. If you are interested in joining their team as a contributing writer/photographer, then add your name to their contributors’ email list here but they are not currently commissioning. 

  • Sidetracked is a print and online journal featuring personal stories of adventures, expeditions, and exploration. They are looking for personal stories (about 1,500 to 2,000 words) of adventure accompanied by breathtaking photography.   • The Ability Toolbox is “a lifestyle and self-help community for people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and mental health conditions.” They primarily publish work by those who have “personal, lived experience with a disability, chronic illness, and/or mental health condition.” They pay $50-$150/article for original content. Pay range depends on the length as well as the research required for the article (short personal stories pay less while in-depth shopping and how-to guides pay more).   • Reappropriate is an Asian American and Pacific Islander race and feminism blog. They have a readership of around 100,000 views per month. They accept pitches and submissions for pieces about race, gender, feminism, politics, and pop culture. Pay: $75 to $150 per piece (800 to 2,500 words). They are “particularly interested in exploring how the Philippines’ Spanish colonial past continues to shape and impact the present.” They give priority to BIPOC and other marginalized voices. Rates: stories of 700 to 1,000 words pay US$50, articles of 1,300+ words pay US$75, and long-form pieces of 3,000+ words pay US$130.   • CRWNMAG is a print magazine for Black women. They exist to “create a progressive dialogue around natural hair and the women who wear it.” They offer paid writing opportunities for their magazine and journal’s print editions. All the submissions should speak to their Brand Pillars, which are knowledge of self, self-love, authenticity, sisterhood, and ownership.   • CBC News is a source for news from Canada and around the world. They are accepting pitches for first person columns from both new and experienced writers. They are particularly seeking “personal stories that reflect contemporary Canada, encompassing experiences from outside major urban centres, from people with disabilities, from Black, Indigenous and other people of colour, and from diverse economic-social perspectives.” They are looking for "interesting personal narratives" from 500 to 600 words.   • Verywell Family is a resource for information on pregnancy and parenting. They are always on the lookout for experienced and qualified writers who have expertise in pregnancy and parenting.   • The Doe is a digital publication that shares anonymous, verified personal narratives to promote civil discourse. They are accepting pitches for stories from voices across the spectrum, including first-time writers.   • Monarch is an online directory that connects therapy seekers to clinicians. They look to create and publish clear, honest, and actionable mental health articles. They have high journalistic standards. They prize science-backed information with a minimum of 1 to 2 quotes from licensed experts as well as references to a minimum of 2 peer-reviewed studies.
