  • insideWaterloo is a publication that amplifies the stories of BIPOC residents of Waterloo Region. They welcome unsolicited submissions but want writers to send them a pitch first. For unsolicited articles, their rates are: $80 for short articles (1,500 words or less) and $120 for feature stories (1,500 to 2,500 words) and photo essays. They also announce themes every 2 to 3 months. For articles based on a theme, their rates are: $150 for short articles (1,500 words or less) and $500 for feature stories (1,500 to 2,500 words) and photo essays.   • CBC Saskatchewan is a source for news stories, breaking news, and viewpoints from Saskatchewan.   • The Monitor is a bimonthly policy and current affairs magazine by CCPA (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives). They publish “feature articles, original research, book reviews, letters to the editor, and illustrations.” According to their senior editor, they pay $300 for short articles of 700 words, $500 for 1,300 to 1,500 words, up to $800 for feature length stories, and $150 to $800 for illustrations.   • The Narwhal is a non-profit magazine that publishes stories about Canada’s natural world. They welcome pitches for stories of up to 2,000 words. They especially welcome pitches from BIPOC writers. Their reporting is “primarily focused on the extractive industries — mining, forestry, fishing and oil and gas extraction — and large-scale conservation.” Their rates start at $0.50 per word.   • Broadview is a Canadian print magazine and website about spirituality, justice, and ethical living. The print magazine is published 10 times a year and the website showcases new content daily. They serve a niche audience of progressive Christians and those who share similar core values. They are looking for stories about “spirituality, ethical living, social justice, and the United Church.” They can be “investigative features, engaging profiles, first-person narratives, reported news stories, essays, photo essays, opinion pieces, blogs, interviews or reviews of books or film.” Rate: $0.65 per word for reported pieces and $0.40 per word for Q&As, blogs, and personal essays.   • Winnipeg Police Cause Harm (WPCH) is a community-centered police abolitionist group that shares "articles and personal essays that tell unique stories from across Canada related to defunding and abolishing carceral systems of policing, prisons, and migrant detention.” They accept pitches for blog posts on an ongoing basis. They are committed to publishing writers of color, especially Black and Indigenous writers.   • Xtra is a Canada-based digital magazine and community platform that covers LGBTQ2 politics, culture, sex, love, and health. They tell stories in multiple ways: “short and long features, profiles, Q&As, essays, opinion pieces, explainers, video documentaries, and podcasts.” Their senior editor indicated that a payment of CAD 400 is the usual base rate for a short-reported story with limited sourcing.
